What is the VAST Community Hub?

The VAST Community Hub is a collaboration between Instantiations and the Smalltalk community to create a home for the best open source projects for the VAST Platform (VA Smalltalk). As of VAST 9.2.1, developers can export VAST code in Tonel format, version it with git, and make it available on GitHub.

You'll find useful and fun projects alike in this collection, and we're looking forward to seeing what repositories the community creates!

Q: Who can contribute to the VAST Community Hub?

A: Anyone. After you're made a member of the VAST Community Hub on GitHub, you can start contributing your projects! Just email, tell us about yourself and the projects you want to do, and we'll get you all set up.

Q: Are there any software requirements to use the VAST Community Hub?

A: Tonel Tools are required to use the VAST Community Hub. Tonel Tools are included into VAST Platform 2021 (10.0.0) and later, but for 9.2.1, 9.2.2 releases, you'll need to download these tools on GitHub at:

Q: Can I use software within the VAST Community Hub for commercial purposes?

A: Usually, but always consult the license agreement within each repo for the details of allowed usage just to be sure.

Q: My team wants to get more involved with the VAST Community Hub. Can we?

A: Absolutely. We'd like more teams to get involved, so if you're interesting in helping or contributing to the VAST Community Hub, please reach out to

Q: What's the difference between Instantiations' GitHub and the VAST Community Hub?

A: We encourage community involvement in both places, but the VAST Community Hub uses a more community-driven approach with limited oversight by Instantiations. In contrast, our engineers give extra attention to the code within Instantiations' GitHub.

Q: Will Instantiations do regular maintenance and development for the projects within the VAST Community Hub?

A: The community is taking the lead on projects within the VAST Community Hub; although Instantiations engineers might jump in occassionally to contribute.

Q: Does Instantiations' CEO really play a VAST-based implementation of Pac-Man during internal meetings?

A: Only when it's absolutely necessary. If you find it necessary too, clone the repo from GitHub:
"Sometimes I play Pac-Man, but Ms. Pac-Man is far superior in all respects."
