Q: How do I workaround the failure of VisualAge Smalltalk V6.0.2 and earlier on Windows XP SP2 and later?
Problem
When I start VisualAge Smalltalk, it exits almost immediately and does not seem to leave any trace of what went wrong.
Solution
Support for Data Execution Prevention was not implemented until VisualAge Smalltalk V6.0.3. If you are running an earlier version, you should disable Data Execution Prevention (DEP) for abt.exe and other VisualAge Smalltalk executable files.
The exact process for turning off DEP differs depending on the version of Windows you are running. You can open Windows Help and search for the term DEP to find out how to turn off DEP for specific executable files on your version of Windows.
